Description
Boston Veterinary Care
10 Chandler St.
Boston, MA 02116
Medical Director
Lead the Medicine. Build the Team. Make an Impact Beyond the Exam Room.
Boston Veterinary Care, a program of the Animal Rescue League of Boston, is looking for an experienced veterinarian to step into a Medical Director role at an exciting point in our growth. This isn't simply an opportunity to inherit an established medical program. You'll have the chance to help shape what comes next.
Boston Veterinary Care is preparing to move into a beautiful, state-of-the-art new facility and is building a strong veterinary team to grow alongside it. We're looking for a Medical Director who enjoys practicing excellent medicine but is equally energized by leadership, setting medical standards, developing people, improving efficiency, and helping a hospital reach its potential. You'll remain active clinically, including performing surgery and dentistry, while serving as the medical leader veterinarians and support staff can turn to for guidance. You'll work closely with the Practice Manager and organizational leadership to create a collaborative environment where quality medicine, strong communication, accountability, and thoughtful growth go hand in hand.
Why This Leadership Opportunity Stands Out
- Build the Medical Program You Want to Lead: BVC is entering a period of growth, giving the Medical Director meaningful influence over clinical standards, protocols, surgical capabilities, workflow, and team development. You'll help establish the pace and expectations for medicine as the practice grows into its new space.
- Stay in Medicine While Leading: This is not a desk-only Medical Director position. You'll continue seeing patients and performing surgery and dentistry while providing visible, hands-on leadership to the medical team. BVC is specifically looking for an experienced, efficient surgeon comfortable independently performing soft-tissue procedures, spays/neuters, and dentistry.
- Leadership Without Giving Up Work-Life Balance: This position is structured around a 32-hour, four-day workweek, with 8-hour shifts and no on-call responsibilities. BVC is planning staggered veterinarian schedules and prioritizing two consecutive days off for team members.
- Practice With Purpose: BVC operates differently from a traditional corporate or privately owned veterinary hospital. As part of a nonprofit organization, the practice's success contributes to ARL's larger mission and community programs. It's an opportunity to build a successful veterinary practice while knowing that the work supports something bigger.
What You'll Help Lead
- As Medical Director, you'll partner closely with the Practice Manager and organizational leadership to:
- Establish and maintain high standards for medicine, surgery, dentistry, and patient care
- Provide coaching, feedback, and clinical guidance to veterinarians and medical support staff
- Lead by example through an active clinical and surgical caseload
- Support onboarding, training, and professional development of the medical team
- Lead regular doctor meetings and encourage collaboration and continuous learning
- Help improve patient flow, surgical capacity, and overall hospital efficiency
- Partner with the Practice Manager on budgeting, operations, policies, and hospital goals
- Understand how clinical decisions affect the overall health and sustainability of the practice
- Help BVC expand its capacity to serve more pets while continuing to elevate its standard of care
We're Looking for a Veterinarian Who
- Holds a DVM degree or equivalent
- Has at least 4 years of veterinary experience
- Has demonstrated veterinary leadership and management experience
- Is a confident, efficient surgeon capable of independently performing routine soft-tissue surgery and dentistry
- Enjoys coaching, mentoring, and developing both veterinarians and support staff
- Can establish clear medical standards while remaining approachable and collaborative
- Understands the connection between clinical decisions, efficiency, client experience, and the financial health of a veterinary practice
- Practices Fear Free or low-stress handling techniques
- Is excited by change, growth, and the opportunity to help shape the future of a practice
Compensation & Benefits
- Competitive annual salary of $175k/year for a 32-hour work week
- Relocation reimbursement of up to $2,500 for eligible moving expenses
- Medical Insurance with 75% Employer Contribution, Dental Insurance with 50% Employer Contribution & 100% Employer Paid Life Insurance + Long-Term Disability
- Vision insurance available
- Employer-paid life and long-term disability insurance
- 15 days PTO
- 11 Paid Holidays
- $2,000 annual CE allowance
- TIAA 403(b) Retirement Plan with up to a 3% employer match
- Veterinary licensing and professional dues reimbursement
- Up to $1,000 per year toward veterinary care for your own pets (for use at any clinic), plus discounted services at BVC
- Eligibility for Public Service Loan Forgiveness through ARL’s nonprofit status
- No on-call responsibilities
- Free off-street parking
