- Associate Veterinarian: Great Medicine. Great Humans. One Judgmental Cat.
Description
Great Medicine. Great Humans. One Judgmental Cat.
At The Hometown Veterinarian, we take medicine seriously—but we don't always take ourselves quite so seriously.
We're an independently owned small animal hospital in Marshalltown, Iowa, with a talented team, advanced medical and surgical capabilities, and our very own Feline Head of Human Resources, "Chilly."
Our team is welcoming, supportive, and genuinely enjoys working together. Chilly, on the other hand, takes her responsibilities very seriously and reserves the right to withhold approval indefinitely.
Fortunately, earning her approval is not a condition of employment.
A Great Place to Practice Medicine
We're looking for a full-time or part-time Associate Veterinarian who shares our commitment to excellent patient care, meaningful client relationships, and practicing medicine the right way.
As an independently owned hospital, we believe veterinarians should have the professional autonomy, resources, and support to make sound medical decisions, guided by what's best for their patients.
What you can expect:
- No non-compete agreement. We want you to stay because you enjoy working here.
- The tools to do it right. Practice thorough, ethical medicine in a hospital that invests in the equipment, staff, and standards needed to provide excellent care.
- Competitive compensation and benefits. We offer a strong salary and benefits package.
- A collaborative environment. We enjoy discussing cases, sharing ideas, and learning from each other. Good medicine is a team effort.
- Opportunities to grow. Develop your professional interests with mentorship, continuing education, and access to advanced medical and surgical capabilities.
The Medicine You Can Practice With Us
While our patients are mostly dogs and cats, our work doesn't stop there. We also care for exotic companion animals and provide veterinary care for wildlife in partnership with local rehabilitators. For veterinarians interested in these areas, there are opportunities to broaden their clinical experience.
We enjoy practicing good medicine and have invested in the equipment, staff, and resources to support it. Here's some of what you'll find at THV:
- In-house laboratory diagnostics, digital radiography, and ultrasound
- Challenging medical cases, with the diagnostic resources, experienced colleagues, and support staff to help work through them
- Comprehensive dentistry, including full-mouth dental radiographs, detailed oral examinations, and treatment planning
- CO laser surgery for every surgical procedure, with therapeutic laser treatments following surgery
- Advanced soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, including TPLO, TTA, and fracture repair
- Consistent surgical standards, including preanesthetic laboratory testing, IV catheters and fluids, electronic monitoring, and a dedicated surgical assistant for every surgical patient
- Proactive multimodal pain management and acupuncture
Our high ratio of skilled support staff to veterinarians allows our doctors to focus on patient care, with experienced team members providing essential assistance throughout the day.
We welcome veterinarians with different clinical interests and strengths. Whether your interests lean toward medicine, dentistry, surgery, or all three, there's room to develop your skills here. Advanced surgical experience is not required.
The Team You'll Work With
We have a talented team of technicians, assistants, and client service staff who take pride in their work and genuinely care about our patients and clients.
We work hard, help each other out, and enjoy having a little fun along the way. We believe in treating each other with respect, talking through disagreements, and finding solutions together.
People may not remember exactly what you did, but they'll remember how you made them feel. We believe that applies to our clients, our coworkers, and even our patients.
We describe The Hometown Veterinarian as "Mayo Clinic meets Chick-fil-A meets Cheers." It's an unusual combination, but it captures what we're working to build. Learn more about The Hometown Veterinarian Difference.
Schedule and Benefits
We offer both full-time and part-time positions.
Our regular hospital hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This position does not require evening, overnight, or weekend shifts, but we're also developing opportunities for veterinarians interested in those hours.
Our compensation and benefits package includes:
- Competitive salary
- Health, dental, and vision insurance
- Retirement plan with employer matching
- Paid time off
- Continuing education allowance and time off for CE
- Professional licensing and membership dues
- Relocation assistance for veterinarians who choose to live in our community
- Retention incentives
Interested in Urgent or Emergency Care?
Our recent hospital expansion has given us the facilities to offer evening, overnight, and weekend urgent and emergency care. We're looking to add these services, and if that type of medicine interests you more than a traditional daytime schedule, we'd welcome a conversation.
Life in Marshalltown, Iowa
One of the things we appreciate about Marshalltown is that you don't have to choose between an affordable place to live and a community with plenty to offer. We have good schools, diverse neighborhoods, and people who take pride in where they live. Visitors often comment on how clean and well-kept our state is.
There's plenty to enjoy outside of work, including parks, trails, golf, local arts and theater, community events, and a nationally recognized public library.
We're about 30 minutes from Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine in Ames and roughly an hour from Des Moines, giving you easy access to larger cities while enjoying life in a smaller community.
